Do I need to be adjacent to the Traveling Merchant or the other Tradesperson to swap them?
The rulebook says the villages don't matter and your pawn needn't be adjacent; community members read the German text the same way.

No — the rulebook says it doesn't matter which villages the Traveling Merchant and the other Tradesperson are in. The line about your pawn not being adjacent 'to one of the two' is awkward; players who checked the German text read it as 'to either'.
