Before the Game
The participants are divided into teams. A team may consist of one or more participants. The more teams that are formed, the more the game is characterized by tactics and teasing. Agree which team starts, and who keeps score on the enclosed pad.
Course of Play
A game consists of several rounds. In one round, each team has one turn.
The first round starts with every team receiving a BEZZERWIZZER, which it keeps for the whole game. Then the teams each draw a category token from the bag. The first team may now choose to answer a question in the drawn category, or to zwap (see "Zwap") its category with one of the opponents' category tokens.
The team then reveals which category it is to get a question in, and the question is read aloud. If the team answers correctly, it gets 3 points. A wrong answer gives 0 points. When the question has been answered, the category token is set aside, and the team's points are noted on the enclosed pad.
The turn then passes clockwise to the next team, which may also choose to zwap its category token. The round continues until all teams have received a question. When all teams have had a turn, a new round begins with each team drawing a new token from the bag.
This course of play continues until a winner is found (see "Deciding the Game"). The right to start changes with the direction of the clock each time a new round begins.
When the bag is empty or contains fewer tokens than the number of teams, all the tokens are put back into the bag, after which play continues. A new question card is drawn for each question.
Deciding the Game
The winner is the team that first reaches 20 points. However, the round is played to completion if one or more of the other teams also have the chance to reach 20 points in the same round.
If the game ends in a tie between two or more teams, each of these teams draws a token from the bag and answers a question in the drawn category. This continues until only one team answers correctly and thereby wins the game.
Zwap
If the team does not wish to answer a question in the drawn category, it may choose to zwap (swap) the category with one of the other teams.
The teams cannot know which category they are zwapping to, as the category tokens must be kept hidden. The tokens may also not be revealed to the other teams when zwapping. Teams may only reveal their category when it is their turn to have a question read out.
The last team in the round cannot zwap, as the other teams have no category tokens left to zwap with.
Bezzerwizzer
When a team is to answer a question, one of the other teams may bezzerwizz (attack) by saying "BEZZERWIZZER". The team that bezzerwizzes thereby gets the chance to score points by answering a question that the defending team cannot answer.
A question can only be bezzerwizzed once. The right to bezzerwizz falls to the team that first says "BEZZERWIZZER". Teams may only bezzerwizz once each per round.
Bezzerwizzing may take place as soon as the category is revealed, but only until the defending team gives its answer.
When a team has bezzerwizzed, its BEZZERWIZZER must be turned face-down and may only be turned back over when a new round begins. All teams regain the right to bezzerwizz when a new round begins.
If the defending team answers its own question correctly, the team that bezzerwizzed cannot score points, but instead loses the right to bezzerwizz again in the current round. Only if the defending team answers incorrectly can the team that bezzerwizzed be rewarded.
The points depend on when the bezzerwizz happens and whether the answer is correct. If bezzerwizzing happens before the question is asked, 2 points are at stake. If bezzerwizzing happens after the question is asked, only 1 point is at stake.
The points go to the bezzerwizzing team if that team answers correctly. If the bezzerwizzing team answers incorrectly or passes, the points go to the defending team. The defending team can thus score points even though it answered its own question incorrectly.
The reader may also bezzerwizz. If she wishes to bezzerwizz before the question is asked, she must of course first look at the question, after she has said "BEZZERWIZZER".
Points
The rulebook's point summary, printed as three boxes on the rules sheet, reads as follows:
- 3: Gives 3 points for answering correctly on the team's own question, whether or not it has been bezzerwizzed.
- 2: The team that bezzerwizzes gets 2 points for a correct answer if the bezzerwizz happens before the question is asked. If the team answers incorrectly, the points go to the defending team.
- 1: The team that bezzerwizzes gets 1 point for a correct answer if the bezzerwizz happens after the question is asked. If the team answers incorrectly, the point goes to the defending team.
Empty the Bag: A Quick Game
