Goal of the Game
Collect brains! How? You receive a brain by being the first to fill all the die spaces on your player board with dice of the corresponding colours. It works like this: each of the 6 coloured segments of your player board (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple) must contain 2 dice with identical values. It doesn't matter which pair of numbers is on which colour segment, but they do have to be in order: ones, twos, threes, fours, fives and sixes.
Setup
Each player receives a player board and places it in front of them, with a cogwheel next to it.
Shuffle the green cards and place them on the table, in a face-down draw pile. Shuffle the red cards and place them on the table, in a second face-down draw pile.
Place 4 dice of each colour per player in a supply in the middle of the table, as follows:
- For 2 players: 8 red, 8 yellow, and 8 blue dice
- For 3 players: 12 red, 12 yellow, and 12 blue dice
- For 4 players: 16 red, 16 yellow, and 16 blue dice
Place the brains in a supply next to the play area, and the dice cup next to them. You're now ready to begin.
How to Play
Draw a Green Card
Before the first player rolls the dice, draw a green card, read it out loud and place it face up next to the draw pile. The card will show an additional rule, invented by Baron von Zom. While the rule might be brainless, he's still your boss! This brainless rule applies to all players, until one of the players has completely covered their board with dice, winning a brain.
Let's Begin!
The youngest player will be the first to roll the dice.
Choose 3 Dice and Roll Up to 3 Times
On your turn, choose 3 dice: either 3 of the same colour, 2 of the same colour and 1 of a different colour, or 3 different colours. It's up to you.
You may now roll your dice up to 3 times. If you're able to place dice on your player board, continue rolling the remaining dice.
Your turn ends when:
a) you can't place any more dice on your player board, or b) you rolled 3 times, or c) you draw a red card.
More on this on the following pages.
Place Your Starting Pair ...
Before you can start placing individual dice on your player board, you must first roll and place a pair. These 2 numbers can be of any colour (or combination of colours), and of any identical value.
Place the pair on the corresponding coloured segment of your player board:
- red + yellow on orange
- yellow + yellow on yellow
- red + red on red
- yellow + blue on green
- blue + red on purple
- blue + blue on blue
... and Insert the Cogwheel
After placing the pair on your player board (as in the image below), place your cogwheel in the middle of your player board.
The pair you just placed on your player board determines how you should orient your cogwheel. Now you know which values have to go on the die spaces that are still empty.
Place Additional Dice
As soon as the starting pair is on your board, you can start placing additional dice. You don't need to roll a pair again: you can also place individual dice.
However, it's important to place them in such a way that they:
a) are DIRECTLY ADJACENT to dice you've already placed, b) match the COLOUR of the empty die space you place them in, AND c) match the correct VALUE, as indicated by the cogwheel.
Example: Next to your starting pair (a yellow and blue 4), you can place a yellow 3 in the space to the left, or a blue 5 in the space to the right.
Important! As the game progresses, gaps may appear between your dice due to the effects of rule cards or event cards. Even then, the rule that new dice must always be placed adjacent to dice you've already placed still applies.
Pass Dice to Other Players
If you have rolled three times or if you have dice left that you cannot place on your board because of their colour, then it gets interesting for the other players.
If any dice you couldn't place after your last roll fit onto other players' boards (next to dice they already placed), you must pass them those dice. Players who receive dice from someone else may immediately place them. If several players could use the same die, you decide who receives it.
Important! You can only pass dice to other players when all players already have dice on their player boards.
Return any remaining dice to the table and pass the dice cup to the player on your left.
Draw a Red Card
If you roll a STRAIGHT (i.e. a sequence of numbers like 1, 2, 3 or 2, 3, 4 etc), you MAY – but don't have to – draw a red card.
If you roll a THREE OF A KIND (3 identical numbers), you MUST draw a red card and carry out its instructions.
Important! If you draw a red card, you're not allowed to place a die from your straight or three of a kind. You don't continue rolling, and you don't pass any dice to other players. Your 3 dice are returned to the supply on the table. After carrying out the instructions on the red card, your turn ends. It's now the next player's turn.
After someone has drawn the final red card, reshuffle the used cards and create a new draw pile with them.
Of the 20 red cards, 13 are beneficial to the player who draws them. The 7 other cards can either be good or bad for the player, depending on the situation and the luck of the dice.
TIP: if you have nothing (or little) to lose, you can confidently draw a red card after rolling a straight. However, if you've already filled most of your die spaces, you should think twice about whether you want to take the risk.
Win a Brain
If you are the first to fill all the die spaces of your player board, you win the round and receive a brain. All players then remove the dice and cogwheel from their player boards. A new green card is drawn, and the next round begins.
The player to the left of whoever won the brain will be the first to roll the dice.
End of the Game
The game ends when one of the players has collected 3 brains in a game with 2 players, or 2 brains in a game with 3 or 4 players. The brain in your head doesn't count.
Have fun!
PS: If you want to play a little longer, agree before the game how many brains are to be collected. There are plenty in the box!
