Summary

Arvuutin is a quiz game in which idle time is unknown! In the game, each player in turn asks a question from a category of their choice, and all players answer at the same time by secretly choosing suitable answer cards from their hand. The answer cards have numbers on them, and a player's answer is the sum of the chosen numbers. The correct answer to every question is a number between one and one hundred.

The players' guesses are revealed simultaneously. The player who guessed closest to the correct number wins the question card, but loses the answer cards they played. Players can collect new answer cards into their hand with the help of a pass card.

During the game the players can influence the value of the different question categories: the more questions of a given category have been asked during the game, the more valuable its question cards are. At the end of the game both the question cards won and the hidden cards dealt at the start of the game are scored. The player with the most points wins the game. Joyful guessing, honoured guessers!

Game Components

  • Game board
  • Five marker pieces
  • 400 question cards (50 from each category)
  • 107 answer cards
  • 8 boxes for question cards
  • 20 hidden cards (piilokortti)
  • 8 pass cards

Question Cards

Each question card has three questions, the correct answer to which is always a number between 1 and 100. The position of the marker piece on the board determines which question on the card is asked. If it is at position III, question III is asked, and so on.

Question Categories

  • Pallon pinnalla (the globe, countries and peoples)
  • Hikeä ja kyyneliä (sports)
  • Sirkushuvit (entertainment and culture)
  • Ajan hammas (history)
  • Eliöiden elämää (animals and plants)
  • Koeputkessa (natural sciences)
  • Oi maamme (questions about Finland)
  • Mappi Ö (random questions)

Setup

  1. The game contains eight different question categories, five of which are chosen for each game. The youngest player chooses first, after which the choosing turn passes clockwise. The chosen question boxes are placed on the game board, in the order of choosing, in the places marked with the letters A, B, C, D and E.

  2. Place the marker pieces on the lowest space of each category.

  3. Shuffle the green, purple and brown answer cards into their own piles and place them on the game board number side down.

  4. Deal each player:

    • 3 green answer cards
    • 2 purple answer cards
    • 2 brown answer cards
    • one pass card
    • two hidden cards*

*These are kept secret from the others for the whole game. If they wish, the players can even out the game by dealing different numbers of hidden cards.

  5. The youngest player starts the game.

Course of a Turn

  1. The player whose turn it is chooses the category from which the next question is asked. The player moves that category's marker piece one notch upward on the game board.
  2. The player whose turn it is draws a card from the chosen category's question box and reads the question aloud. The ordinal number of the question to be asked is determined by the position of that category's marker piece on the game board.
  3. All players form their answer from the answer cards in their hand and place them face down on the table in front of them. The answer is the sum of the numbers on the chosen cards.
  4. When everyone has finished their answer, that is, has placed their chosen cards on the table in front of them, the cards are revealed simultaneously.
  5. The player whose answer is closest to the correct answer printed on the reverse side of the question card wins the round and takes the question card just used in front of them as a sign of this.
  6. The winning player(s) lose the answer cards they used, and these are put into the discard pile. The other players take the cards they used back into their hand.
  7. After this the turn to ask passes clockwise to the next player.

Other Matters

  • Top knowledge bonus (Huipputietobonus): If a player got their answer exactly right, they keep the answer cards they used.
  • If more than one player hits equally close to the correct answer, they each get one question card. The first gets the question card just used and the rest take theirs from that category's question box.
  • If the question was asked while the marker piece was on a space marked x2, the winner(s) get two question cards instead of one. The extra cards are taken from that category's question box.
  • Won question cards are kept visible to everyone in front of the players.
  • If any of the answer card draw piles runs out, the cards of that colour are gathered from the discard pile and shuffled into a new draw pile.

Pass Card

If a player included the pass card among the answer cards they chose, their answer is not taken into account when determining the winner of the question. Instead, the player may take back into their hand all the cards they played that round, and in addition pick three new answer cards from piles of their choice.*

*The green pile has cards from 1-9, the purple from 10-20 and the brown 30-80.

End of the Game and Scoring

The game ends when the marker piece of the third of the five question categories rises above the maintenance level (huoltotaso). One last question is still asked from this category, which exceptionally is worth three cards.

When the last question has been asked and its winner determined, the points are counted.

Players receive points from the question cards they have won. The point value of each category's cards can be seen from the position of the category's marker piece. For example, if the marker piece is at level 3 at the end of the game, each question card of that category gives three points.

In addition, players receive points from the hidden cards dealt at the start of the game. These cards are marked with one of the five category lines (A, B, C, D and E), and these cards are worth the same number of points as the question cards of that category.

The player who has collected the most points wins the game!

Example

During the game the player has won the question cards shown in the picture, and it is time for the final scoring. The two Eliöiden elämää cards the player has collected are both worth three points, because the category is in vertical row A and its marker piece is at level three. Correspondingly, the three Pallon pinnalla cards are each worth four points. In total the player thus gets 2x3 + 3x4 = 18 points from the collected question cards.

The player also reveals their hidden cards, which are marked with the letters A and B. The player gets 3 points from the A card and 4 points from the B card. In total the player's points are thus 3+4+18 = 25.
