Requirements
To play this expansion, you need Arena: the Contest (Core Box): it comes with Heroes, dice, the main board, and other essential components. You don't need to read Arena's Rulebook to play the Epic Campaign.
Tanares Adventures is an expansion for Arena: the Contest. You need Tanares Adventures' Rulebook: it focuses largely on the rules of the Cooperative Mode that you need to know.
This book expands Arena (Novelties and PvP Expansions) and Tanares Adventures ("Time Twist" Epic Level Cooperative Campaign).
Novelties
New Barrier — Pillar (Scenario Pack)
- This miniature has two possible positions:
- Standing (placed upright, occupying 1 square): apply Wall rules.
- Toppled (placed sideways, occupying 3 squares): apply Barricade rules.
- Pillars are always Standing when a quest begins.
- (a Standing Pillar): Topple the Pillar, so that it occupies 3 orthogonal squares (its base must remain on the same square).
- You can only topple it onto Combatants and Terrains (not onto Barriers or Obstacles).
- If a Pillar is Toppled onto a combatant, it takes 10 DMG and must MOVE to its closest free square (controlled by the interacting hero).
You may Topple it in any of the four orthogonal directions. If you're in one of these directions (i.e., not diagonally in [1] of it), it may Topple onto you (in which case you must move and take DMG).
The book shows a diagram of a Standing Pillar (square 1) and a Toppled Pillar (squares 1 to 3).
New Obstacle — Banner (Scenario Pack)
- PvP — Team Deathmatch: used to protect against future skills of the enemy Team (see "Chi Battle" Expansion).
- Time Twist Campaign: one is gained every time you accomplish an Extra Challenge — any hero may discard it at any time to re-roll a die.
- On the board, Banners are considered Obstacles.
New Effects
These effects are printed on the same page as the Scenario Pack obstacles. They are keyed to villain colour. Dread's villain kit places Anger (Red), Envy (Green), Fear (Orange) and Greed (Blue) (see Initial Placement under Quest 108).
THROW (Red villains)
- The target of this effect is PUSHED in a straight line and away from the villain. Then, it take "X" DMG, "X" being the number of squares moved. (Printed as it stands: "it take".)
- The thrown target must stop just before it leaves the grid or enters a square with anything (except Terrains).
- If the position of the villain is so that you're thrown diagonally, you DO NOT stop when crossing the corner of an occupied square (i.e., including walls).
- The thrown target must stop just before it leaves the grid or enters a square with anything (except Terrains).
DOUBLE ATTACK (Blue villains)
- After the villain's attack resolves, it gains an extra Move and Prime Action (once per turn).
These extra actions are not considered a new turn; all "once per turn" effects cannot apply again.
- I.e., the Double Attack effect itself cannot become a "triple attack;"
- I.e., if the Passive Power was already applied, it cannot apply again;
- I.e., if the villain had incited a Reaction before its first attack, you may not deal Reaction DMG to it again.
- I.e., if a hero was controlling this villain when it made the first attack, the second attack is made under that hero's control, also.
Save for the "once per turn" restrictions, the villain behaves as if it were a new turn:
- Check Favorite Target again (it may have changed, or not);
- It may move as usual (and even Dark Surge, in some occasions).
DISPELLING STRIKE (Green villains)
- Remove all Temporary and Permanent effects from this villain, and from its farthest hero.
CONTAGION (Orange villains)
- All heroes in [2] of the villain gain one copy of the Condition Token indicated on its card.
New Cosmetic Figures
- Tombstone: Marks heroes' square of death.
- Malign Tower: Replaces Fatigue Cube for heroes.
The book pictures a Banner, a Tombstone and a Malign Tower as miniatures.
Quest 108 — Dread, the Ungod (Epic 7)
Kill the first Ungod to break the Plane of Exile's seal before it strengthens to the point of becoming unstoppable. This is the only way to give the world of Tanares a fighting chance.
Primary Objective
Kill Dread, the Ungod (Boss) = Read {109.1}
If you lose: The world ends.
Extra Challenge
- No villain is alive when Dread dies.
Special Rules
Dread doesn't have different Body Parts. It is this Quest's Boss.
(The source prints "this Quests's Boss"; the possessive is corrected here.)
Ritual of Purification (Quest Items, Mission Tiles)
Slaying the penumbral monsters that invade the material plane creates Flimsy Pockets of Hope, but eventually their vibrations are absorbed (and strengthen) the Boss.
- Whenever a villain dies, if there is no Quest Item on its card, place a Mission Tile of its color on its square of death (if the presence of other Tiles makes it impossible, place on the four closest possible squares). Then, place a Quest Item on the card of this dead villain.
- Whenever a Mission Tile is placed, if now there are two or more Mission Tiles on the grid, choose Mission Tiles to remove until there is only one left. For each one removed this way, the Boss HEALS 25.
- [R] If there is a Quest Item on all villain cards (except Boss), remove all Quest Items, then HEAL 40 one Hero and deal 40 DMG to the Boss.
(The source prints a red "R" badge before some rules. Its meaning is not defined in this excerpt, so the badge is kept as printed.)
Flimsy Pockets of Hope (Mission Tiles)
- Heroes on Mission Tiles are Shielded 40.
- If a Hero on a Mission Tile is attacked, remove that Mission Tile after the attack resolves.
Penumbral Summoning
While the Ungod focuses on recovering its full power, it sends penumbral minions to take care of you, a minor nuisance.
- [R] Place all dead villains in [1] of the hero with lowest HP.
Artifacts of Power (Tool Tokens)
- [Interact icon]: Put this Tool Token on the card of the interacting hero (max. 1 per hero).
(The interact icon is an image glyph and is not recoverable from the text layer.)
Tool Tokens on the Hero Card
| Tool on the Hero Card | Power granted to that hero |
|---|---|
| Torch | Your first attack hit against an enemy on your turn deals +10 DMG. |
| Hook | At the start or end of your turn you may PULL 6 a villain (once per turn). |
| Key | You are Shielded 8 (once per turn). |
| Tome | At the end of your turn, you gain 2 [icon]. |
(The Tome row's reward icon is an image glyph and is not recoverable from the text layer.)
Penumbral Influence
Your material actions produce penumbral reactions.
Apply the following cumulative effects, according to your level of Penumbral Influence:
| Penumbral Influence | Effect |
|---|---|
| 0 | Nothing. |
| 1 | Two heroes choose one of their Special Attacks to begin the quest spent. |
| 2 | The other two heroes choose one of their Special Attacks to begin the quest spent. |
| 3 | 1 Empowered Token. |
| 4 | 2 Empowered Tokens. |
| 5 | 3 Empowered Tokens. |
[R] For each hero [3] or more away from the Boss, it gains… (printed as a single entry spanning Penumbral Influence 3, 4 and 5).
(The source's wording "it gains…" is printed as it stands. The subject of "it" is not named in this excerpt.)
Initial Placement
- Place Anger (100-R), Envy (101-G), Fear (102-O), Greed (105-B) and Dread.
- Place each Hero on a different Portal Figure. Each may reassign two Skill Tokens. Then, take the first turn!
As soon as the Boss dies, you win the Quest and read {109.1}.
(Section 109.1 is not included in this transcription; see the note in the Table of Contents.)
