Components

  • 80 tiles: 10 tarsiers, 10 chimpanzees, 10 mandrills, 14 lemurs, 12 orangutans, 24 banana depots
  • 60 plastic disks: 15 in each of four player colors
  • 4 pawns, one per player
  • 24 money tokens
  • 1 map of Ape Town

Game Setup

Shuffle all 80 tiles and randomly place one on each space of the tri-color territory track that runs along the outer edge of the game board. Set all remaining tiles aside face down.

Tiles placed in the first two sections (i.e., along the top edge) of the board are placed face up. All other tiles are placed face down.

Each player chooses a color and receives the corresponding pawn and plastic disks. They place the pawn on space 0 of the score track and the disks in front of themselves to form a supply. Each player also receives 6 money tokens.

Game Play

A random player begins and play proceeds clockwise. Each player's turn consists of the following steps:

1. Claim a Tile

Claim a face-up tile from the territory track. The leftmost (i.e., first clockwise) tile is free. If you decide to claim any other tile, you must place one money token on each tile passed over.

Any money tokens previously placed on the selected tile are claimed as well.

2. Place Selected Tile

Place the selected tile onto an empty space of the central map that is within a region matching the color of the space on the territory track from which the tile was claimed.

Note: If no empty space exists within a matching region, the tile may be placed in any region.

Tile Abilities

Depending on the tile played, proceed as follows:

Tarsier / Chimpanzee / Mandrill — Immediately score 1 / 2 / 3 points for each adjacent banana depot.

Banana Depot — Immediately score a number of points equal to the printed value of each adjacent tile.

Orangutan / Lemur — Overlay one of your plastic disks onto the tile.

Revealing New Tiles

If, at the end of a player's turn, all 5 tiles within a territory track section have been claimed, reveal all face-down tiles in the next section clockwise.

When necessary, resupply the territory track using the tiles set aside during setup.

Completing Regions

When all spaces within a region are occupied, points are awarded for orangutans and lemurs:

1. Establish Dominance

The player with the most orangutans in the region scores a number of points equal to the printed value of each tile within it.

If tied, the player with the most lemurs in the region wins — even if they did not have the most orangutans! If still tied, no points are awarded.

2. Extort Adjacent Regions

Each neighboring region that contains fewer lemurs than the region just completed pays out a number of points equal to the printed value of each tile within it, divided amongst players who own lemurs in the scoring region, rounded up.

End of Game

The game ends immediately after scoring the final region. Players then receive 1 point for each money token in their possession.

The player with the most points wins. If tied, the player who would take their turn next wins.
