Components

  • 63 Item cards — 1-9 in 7 Item Types
  • 7 Collector cards — 1 for each Item Type
  • 4 Invitation cards — with 4 Player Pawns
  • 2 Auction House boards (one for 2-3 players, one for 4 players)

Object of the Game

Your goal is to escape the manor with the least haunted set of loot... that is, if you escape at all!

Setup

  1. Separate all the cards into their three types: Item cards, Collector cards, and Invitation cards.

    • If playing with 2 players, remove all the Item cards of any two Types (colors) and return them to the game box.
  2. Have each player choose a player color by selecting one of the 4 Invitation cards and placing it in front of them, leaving room next to it for a personal scoring area called their Warehouse.

  3. Shuffle all the Item cards and deal 3 to each player to form their starting hand. Each player may look at their own hand of cards at any time, and should otherwise keep it secret from the other players.

  4. Deal a number of Item cards according to the player count table, arranging them around the edges of the Auction House board.

    2 Players5 Item cards
    3 Players

The player using this color will take the first turn of the game. If there is a tie for the lowest Haunt Level in the Manor, refer to the tiebreaker chart on any Invitation card and choose the card with the Item Type of lowest dollar value. Then continue adding random pawns clockwise around the Item Lots until all have been placed.

Example of set up for 4 players: the Item Deck and Collector cards sit beside the Manor (Item Lots arranged around the central Auction House card). Blue will take the first turn of the game.

On Your Turn

Players take turns in clockwise order around the table, starting with the player next to the Item Lot with the lowest Haunt Level. Each turn is made up of the following 4 steps taken in order:

  1. Take an Action
  2. Check for Filled Item Lots
  3. Check for Collectors
  4. Refill Hand and Manor

1: Take an Action

On their turn, players must take one of two available actions:

  • Appraise: Add one Item card from your hand to the top of any Item Lot, regardless of whether your player pawn is next to it. The card you place must match either the Item Type (color) or Haunt Level (number) of the card currently on top of the Item Lot.

OR

  • Move: Move your player pawn to any other Item Lot that does not have another pawn next to it. Then take all of the cards in the Item Lot and add them to your Warehouse (scoring area).

If you are unable to legally take an Appraise action on your turn, you must Move instead.

Appraise Example: The Gray player has chosen to take an Appraise action: they take a 4 Haunt level card from their hand and add it to an Item Lot in the Manor that also has a Haunt level of 4.

Move Example: The Blue player has taken a Move action: they move their pawn to an empty Item Lot, then add any cards in this location to their Warehouse.

2: Check for Filled Item Lots

If a player who takes the Appraise action adds a third card to any Item Lot, it is considered filled and resolved immediately:

  • If there is already a player pawn next to the filled Item Lot, including your own, that player immediately adds all of its Items to their Warehouse.
  • If there is no player pawn next to the filled Item Lot, you MUST move your player pawn from its current Item Lot to the filled one. Then add all of its Items to your Warehouse.

Filled Item Lot Example: The Red player has filled the Item Lot where the Yellow player is located: The Yellow player will immediately add all cards in this Item Lot to their Warehouse.* (*Unless discarded by matching the Auction House, see below.)

The Auction House

In the center of the Manor is the Auction House, with a single card representing the Item Type auctioneers are currently hoping to add to an upcoming event. Any time the players would take Item cards from an Item Lot, they first remove any of those cards that match the Item Type in the Auction House, then discard those matching cards as well as current Auction House card.

Discarding the Auction House Example: The Red player has filled the Item Lot where the Yellow player is located: Since the Furniture (blue) Item matches the Type in the Auction House, the Yellow player will discard both blue items before adding the Clothing (pink) and Artwork (green) in the Lot to their Warehouse.

Managing Your Warehouse

When you add Item cards to your Warehouse, place them in a series of columns by Item type, overlapped so the Haunt Level on each card is visible. Each of these columns is called a Collection.

You may only have 1 Collection of each Item Type (color) at a time and cards you acquire from the Manor must be placed in an existing Collection if possible. The total Haunt Level of your Collections will count against you at the end of the game, but you may be able to reduce it by attracting the attention of Collectors!

Warehouse Example: The Red player has the most Artwork (green) items in their warehouse and has attracted a Collector, giving them only 4 points for their Artwork Collection! If another player later adds a fourth Artwork to their Warehouse, Red will need to return the Collector to the table. But if another player gains their 5th Artwork, they can steal the Collector for themselves!

3: Check for Collectors

After a player has finished adding any Item cards to their Warehouse on their turn, check to see if they currently have the single most cards of any Item Type in their collection. If they do, they immediately take the matching Collector card from the play area, or from an opposing player who previously had the most! Place the Collector in your Warehouse above the matching Collection. While you have a Collector visiting your Warehouse, the Haunt Level of all the cards in the matching Collection is reduced to 1.

After adding Item cards to a Warehouse, check if any Collection is tied for having the most cards of that type. If so, the Collector for that type is returned to the center of the table. You must have more cards of the appropriate type than anyone else to gain or retain the Collector.

4: Refill Hand and Manor

The final step of a player's turn is to refill cards in their hand and the play area in the following order:

  1. First, if you have fewer than 3 cards in your hand, refill it by drawing back up to 3 cards from the top of the Item deck.
  2. Next, if there are any empty Item Lots in the Manor, refill them each with one Item by drawing from the top of the Item deck and placing the card face-up in the empty Item Lot.
  3. Finally, if the Auction House is empty, draw the top card of the Item deck and place it face-up in the center of the Manor.

Game End and Scoring

The game ends immediately when the last card of the Item deck is drawn.

Players then add any remaining Items in their hand to their Warehouses (and move Collectors as appropriate), then each player totals the sum of the Haunt Levels in their Warehouse Collections to represent their final score. However, any players with Collectors in their Warehouses only add 1 point for each of their Items of the matching type.

The player with the LOWEST score is the winner, having escaped the Manor with the least haunted cache of collectibles!

At the end of the game, you MUST add the cards left in your hand to the appropriate Collections in your Warehouse.

If there is a tie for the lowest score:

  • Players identify their Warehouse Collection with the most cards in it. If a player has two Collections which are tied for having the most cards, they may choose which one is considered the largest. Determine the dollar value of the collection by multiplying the number of cards by the corresponding dollar value below. The Haunt Level does not matter when determining the dollar value. The player with the Collection that has the highest total dollar value is the winner!

Item Type (card color as shown on the chart)Dollar value
    Furniture (blue)$20K
    Jewelry (red)$15K
    Relics (orange)$10K
    Artwork (green)$7K
    Manuscripts (purple)$5K
    Weaponry (gray)$3K

Reference

Setup:

  • Deal each player 1 Invitation and 3 Item cards.
  • Deal Item Lots to the Manor depending on player count (2 Players: 5 Item cards; 3 Players: 5 Item cards; 4 Players: 6 Item cards).
  • Deal 1 card to the center as the Auction House.
  • Mix pawns and place them randomly next to Item Lots clockwise, starting with lowest value Item.
  • Display Collectors to one side of the Manor.

On Your Turn:

  1. Move to and claim an Item Lot that doesn't have a pawn OR add an Item card from your hand to any Item Lot.
  2. If an Item Lot now has 3 Items, the pawn there claims it; if no pawn is there then you move and claim it. Cards matching the Auction House card are discarded along with the Auction House card.
  3. Take Collectors for Item Types you have the most of. Tied Collectors return to the center.
  4. Refill hand, empty Item Lots, and the Auction House if it is empty.

Game Ends: Game ends when the deck is empty. Lowest total Haunt Level wins.

Item Type Value: Tiebreaker Chart: Furniture $20K, Jewelry $15K, Relics $10K, Artwork $7K, Manuscripts $5K, Weaponry $3K, Clothing $1K.

5 Item cards
4 Players6 Item cards

These cards are called the Manor. Each card represents the start of an Item Lot in the Manor. Then draw a final card and place it in the center on the Auction House board as the Auction House card. Set the remaining Item cards in a face-down deck to the side of the play area, leaving room next to it for a shared discard pile.

  • Place all the double-sided Collector cards in a grid or line next to the Manor within easy reach of all players (their order does not matter).

  • Gather all the pawns for the chosen player colors and mix them thoroughly. Find the Item Lot containing the Item card with the lowest Haunt Level (the number in its upper left and lower right corners). Place a random player pawn next to this card on the outside of the Manor.

  • If there is still a tie, the tied players repeat this process with their second largest Warehouse Collection.

  • If there is still a tie, the tied players share the victory!
