The Shelter Cards

The shelter card has a yellow block, a green block, a blue block, a red block, a baby block, a score area and a solo version area.

How to Play Animal Rescue

Each player takes a shelter card and a pencil. Remove 1 white dice from the game if less than 5 players are playing.

The player who was the last to pet an animal is the active player, and begins the round by throwing all the dice. The player chooses 1 dice and place it in front of him/her. The player must draw the animal that is on the chosen dice in one of the empty pens at the animal shelter. The colour of the chosen dice determines in which block the animal goes. An animal on the white dice may be placed in any block, except for the baby block. Think carefully about which animal you choose and where it should be draw, because there are various ways to earn points and extra animals:

Score Points

On the shelter card, there are 5 different blocks (4 main blocks and 1 baby block), each with 6 pens. How the players can earn points is set out above each block. Each dog or cat in the yellow block earns +1 point, each frog or crocodile in the green block earns +1 point, each chicken or owl in the red block earns +1 point, while in the blue block, you score +1 point for each different animal placed there. Extra bonus points can be earned for each block and baby block.

  • +3 per full block
  • +3 3 of the same animal per block
  • +3 4 different animals per block
  • +6 5 different animals per block
  • +10 6 different animals per block

Baby Animals

Whenever two of the same animals are placed directly above or next to each other in a block, a baby animal is born in the same turn from this animal pair! (But baby animals can't have a baby.) The player draws a circle around the animal pair and draws the same baby animal in an empty nursery in the baby block. You also earn a bonus animal. The nursery where the baby is placed determines where a bonus animal should be drawn.

(Illustrations show two animal pairs and two examples of no animal pair.)

If you place a baby animal in a red nursery pen, then the bonus animal you draw must be the animal showing on the red dice, and you have to draw it in the red block of your animal shelter. If you choose a green nursery, then you must draw the animal on the green dice in the green block, etc.

Tip: when placing a bonus animal, another animal pair can be formed, from which a baby animal can be born. This way, more baby and bonus animals can be drawn in each turn. It is possible to form multiple animal pairs per block. A circled animal cannot be used to form another animal pair.

End of the Round

When a player has chosen their dice and drawn their animals, the turn goes to the player to the left of the active player, and he or she chooses 1 of the remaining dice and then draw the chosen animal in the matching block on his/her shelter card. The round continues this way until all players have chosen one dice and drawn in the chosen animals.

2 Players: when there are only 2 players, both players choose two dice each turn and per round. One dice is not played.

The round is now finished and the player on the left of the active player becomes the new active player. He begins a new round by throwing all the dice. He is now the first to choose a dice, and so forth.

End of the Game

Once one of the players has 3 full blocks, the game ends after all players in this last round have chosen a dice and drawn their last animal.

  • First count up the points per player in the 4 main blocks and write the scores in the round box on the upper right corner of the blocks.
  • Then count up the bonus points for all 5 blocks (coloured blocks + baby block) and note them on the score card.
  • Finally, count up the different scores.

The player with the most points wins the game!

Solo Version

Before you begin, choose a level of difficulty and circle it:

  • 25: Praktikant (25 points)
  • 30: Freiwilliger (30 points)
  • 35: Tierpfleger (35 points)

The game is played with 5 dice (1 white dice is removed from the game at the beginning). The 5 dice are rolled for each round and the player may use 1, 2, 3, or 4 of the 5 dice to fill the different blocks. Follow the same rules as for the standard game.

Don't like what you have rolled? You may throw all the dice again before you draw an animal in one of the blocks, but by doing so you must cross off a re-roll box on the shelter card. There are 3 re-roll boxes, so you can only do this three times. Drawing your first animal starts the round so don't forget to cross off a 'Round box' to keep track of the round you are in.

The game ends after completing 3 rounds. Scoring goes as per the normal game. You win the game once you have achieved the score of the chosen level of difficulty.
