Components

  • 40 mahjong cards
  • 48 score chips (10-point, 5-point and 1-point chips)
  • 1 dealer card (親 card)
  • 1 starting-wind card (起親 card, the seat wind card)
  • 1 rulebook

Game Overview

Players make five-card hands to win score chips. The player with the most score chips at the end of the game wins.

Setup

Give every player 25 points in chips: one 10-point chip, two 5-point chips and five 1-point chips.

Choose a dealer (the starting player) by any method. Place the dealer card and the starting-wind card in front of the dealer, with the "East" side face up.

Shuffle the mahjong cards and deal 4 cards to each player as their hand. Place the remaining cards face down in the centre as the draw pile.

Take the top card of the draw pile, set it aside, and reveal it as the Dora indicator card.

The source notes that the photographs show a four-player game.

Turn Order

Play begins with the dealer and proceeds counter-clockwise.

On your turn, draw one card from the draw pile, then discard one card from your hand face up.

Place discards in front of their owner, so that every discard is visible to all players.

Going Out

You go out when your hand, after drawing from the draw pile or taking another player's discard, forms the five-card pattern described under "Requirements for Going Out" below. When you go out, reveal your hand and score it.

You may go out on another player's discard. If you do, that is a Ron. You may go out on your own draw. If you do, that is a Tsumo.

Tsumo (self-draw)

When you go out by drawing a card yourself, the other players each pay a share of the score. The total score is divided by the number of other players, rounded up to the next whole point, and each other player pays that amount to the player who went out.

Ron (win on a discard)

When you go out on another player's discard, the player who discarded pays the entire score to the player who went out.

Dealer and Rotation

If the dealer goes out, the dealer receives +2 points and remains the dealer for the next round. If a non-dealer goes out, or no one goes out, the dealer position passes counter-clockwise.

When the dealer position has gone all the way around the table once, turn the starting-wind card over so that "South" is face up.

Requirements for Going Out

A winning hand consists of five cards in the following formation:

  • One Atama (pair): two identical cards.
  • plus one Shuntsu (sequence of three consecutively numbered cards in one suit) or one Koutsu (triplet of three identical cards).

Notes from the yaku card:

  • A sequence must be three consecutive numbered cards. "9" and "1" are not consecutive.
  • Pon, Chi, Kan and Riichi from mahjong are not available.

Yaku (Hands) for Going Out

Each hand has a basic point value. The basic value is always paid. Yaku are then added to the basic value.

The game has two types of hand, Chin Itsu and Hon Itsu. A hand is scored under one type or the other.

Chin Itsu Type

Always-supplied basic points: 6 P. The "H" card is not included in a Chin Itsu hand.

  • Pinfu (No-Points Hand): 1 P. The pair and the sequence are all made of numbered cards 1 to 9, and the sequence is formed by a Ryanmen wait pattern. Ryanmen wait pattern: the pair is formed and the hand is waiting for the "outside numbers" of two consecutively numbered cards to form a sequence. Examples from the card: 9 9 with 5 6 is waiting for "4 or 7"; 3 3 with 7 8 is waiting for "6 or 9".
  • Toitoi (triplet) without "H": 2 P. The pair and the triplet are both made from numbered cards only.
  • Tanyao: 1 P. The pair and the sequence or triplet consist only of numbered cards 2 to 8 from any suit.
  • Junchan: 3 P. The pair is "1" or "9", and the sequence includes "1" or "9".

Hon Itsu Type

Always-supplied basic points: 3 P. The "H" card is included in the hand.

  • Hatsu: 1 P. The pair is 7 7 and the triplet is H H H.
  • Toitoi with "H": 2 P. The pair and the triplet, with "H" included in either of them.
  • Honrou (All terminals and honours): 2 P. The pair and the triplet, with all cards being "1", "9" or "H".
  • Chanta: 2 P. The pair is H H and the sequence includes "1" or "9".

Bonus Points

  • Tsumo: 1 P. Go out by drawing a card from the draw pile.
  • Dora: 1 P for each Dora card included in the completed hand.
  • Tenhou (Heavenly Hand): 6 P. The initial cards dealt to the dealer complete a hand. Includes 1 point for Tsumo.
  • Chiihou (Hand of Earth): 6 P. The initial cards dealt to a non-dealer complete a hand. Includes 1 point for Tsumo.

Except for Yakuman (Limit Hand), all yaku can be combined with each other along with the basic points.

Yakuman (Limit Hand)

Yakuman hands score a fixed value and are not combined with other yaku. Only Tenhou and Chiihou points may be added to a Yakuman.

  • Chinroutou (All Terminals): 24 P. The pair is "1" or "9", and the triplet is "1" or "9".
  • Ryuuiisou (All Green): 24 P. The pair is combined with a sequence or triplet. "H" is not included in any of them. The hand contains only green number cards. Available cards are "2", "3", "4", "6", and "8" of sou.
  • Super All Green: 30 P. The pair is combined with a sequence or triplet. "H" is included in one of them. The hand contains only green number cards. Available cards are "2", "3", "4", "6", "8" of sou, and "H".

Scoring Examples

  • Example 1 (Chin Itsu, Tsumo): 11 P in total. Going out by Ryanmen and Tsumo: pair 9 9 + sequence 1 2 3 gives Chin Itsu 6 P, Pinfu 1 P, Junchan 3 P, Tsumo 1 P.
  • Example 2 (Chin Itsu, Ron): 9 P in total. Going out by Ron: pair 6 6 + triplet 7 7 7 gives Chin Itsu 6 P, Toitoi 2 P, Tanyao 1 P.
  • Example 3 (Hon Itsu, Ron): 8 P in total. Going out by Ron: pair 9 9 + triplet H H H gives Hon Itsu 3 P, Hatsu 1 P, Toitoi 2 P, Honrou 2 P.
  • Example 4 (Hon Itsu, Ron, with Dora): 7 P in total. Going out by Ron and Dora of H: pair H H + sequence 7 8 9 gives Hon Itsu 3 P, Chanta 2 P, 2 Dora 2 P.

Ending the Game

The game ends when a player's score goes negative, or when every player has been dealer twice.

The player with the most score chips wins.
