What does the number in the square on an occupation card mean, and which occupations do I use at each player count?

It is the minimum player count: 1+ cards are used in every game, 3+ cards are added in games of three or more, 4+ cards in games of four or more. A two-player game therefore uses only the 1+ occupations. The 3+ cards are optional in a three-player game, though most players include them.
