On the base Lessons space your first occupation is free and each later one costs 1 food. In a 3-player game the second Lessons space costs 2 food. In a 4-player game that second Lessons space charges 1 food for your first two occupations played there and 2 food after that. The "first occupation free" rule applies to every player, only on the base Lessons space.
