In the feeding phase, must I spend my grain, vegetables or animals, and can I convert them to food any time?

You must spend any food you have, but you are never forced to convert animals, grain or vegetables to feed your family. Grain and vegetables are each worth 1 food at any time, while baking bread with an improvement is a separate Bake Bread action and cannot be done during the feeding phase by itself. Animals need a tankard improvement (Fireplace or Cooking Hearth) to become food.
