Iraq
Iraq uses the base rules except where the changes below apply.
Setup
- Separate the black cubes from the other cubes. Roll one die for each oil field hex (the black hexes) and place that many black cubes on that hex. Note that all of the black cubes may be placed at this point. It is also possible that there are not enough black cubes for the dice results. In that case, the players choose which oil field hexes receive fewer cubes, either freely or at random (the players decide among themselves how to do this).
- Any black cubes still remaining after placement on the oil field hexes are returned to the bag with the other cubes.
- Place 2 cubes at random in each city except BAGHDAD. Place nothing in BAGHDAD.
- Place cubes on the goods display as normal, but leave the 5 and 6 columns of the white side and the 5 and 6 columns of the black side empty.
How to Play
Track Laying
Laying Costs
- The cost of laying a single track on a desert hex is $3. All other laying costs are the same as normal.
- Oil field hexes:
- Track cannot be laid on an oil field hex.
- Only a player who has chosen the Engineer action may lay track that connects to an oil field hex.
- There are also external links marked with EU flags and American flags. The laying cost of these is $5. The EU and American flags function as black cities, and black cubes transported to them give bonus points at the end of the game (see "Goods Transport" and "Game End").
Action: Engineer
- As normal, you may lay 4 track pieces. At this time, you may lay track that connects to oil field hexes.
Goods Transport
- Black cubes transported to the EU or American flags are kept by the transporting player.
- Oil field hexes are treated as town hexes. That is, each time a cube passes through one, income increases by 1. However, unless the U.S. Army Escort action is used, black cubes cannot pass through oil field hexes.
- BAGHDAD accepts blue, red and yellow cubes.
Action: U.S. Army Escort
Translator's note: the player who chooses this action represents it by placing a disc on the U.S. ARMY on the map.
- A cube may pass through a city of its own color during transport without stopping there. For each cube, until it arrives at its destination city, it may pass through one city of that cube's color.
Goods Replenishment
Action: Production
- First, if there are still black cubes in the bag, take one black cube and place it directly on any oil field hex of your choice.
- Then draw 4 cubes at random from the bag, and place 1 of them on any empty space of the goods display (excluding the 5 and 6 columns of the black side). Return the cubes that were not placed to the bag.
Income Reduction
- Before the income reduction of the final round, each player's income increases by 1 for each oil drum (black cube) they have in their possession.
Berlin
Berlin uses the base rules except where the changes below apply.
Designer's Comment
The cities and towns on the map represent the squares, buildings and stations of Berlin. For clarity, however, these rules use the terms normally used in the standard Age of Steam.
Setup
- Place 2 cubes at random in each city.
- If there is a blue cube (U.S. Army) in East Berlin, replace it with a cube of another color.
- If there is a red cube (Soviet forces) in West Berlin, replace it with a cube of another color.
- Place cubes on all spaces of the goods display as normal.
- Place 1 red player disc on the round track, on the round before the final round. (For example, in a 4-player game the game ends after round 8, so place the red disc on the round 7 space.)
- Place the 19 red player discs along the black lines, one on each side, to form the Berlin Wall.
How to Play
Track Laying
- In each round, each player may lay only 2 track pieces.
- The cost of towns is as normal. The cost of laying and replacing track on all other hexes is $3.
- Track may be laid toward the wall (a red disc) only if the city lies directly on the opposite side of the wall. As long as a red disc is at the end of a link, that link cannot be used for transport. However, it is still a completed link and is counted in final scoring. Also, if the link is not extended in later rounds, the player does not lose ownership of it. The link simply cannot be used for transport until the red disc is removed.
- Until the red disc is removed, track may not be laid through the wall to extend onto the other side.
Action: Engineer
Choose one of the following:
- a. Lay or replace up to 3 track pieces.
- b. Lay or replace up to 2 track pieces, and additionally remove 1 red disc from the map.
Goods Transport
- Cubes cannot pass through the red discs (the Berlin Wall). Transport from east to west (or the reverse) is possible only through a hole in the wall that was opened by a player using ability b. of the Engineer action above.
- In all rounds except the final two (that is, the rounds before the red disc), the following applies:
- On the east side of the wall, a red cube represents Soviet forces. A city on the east side that contains a red cube may only have red cubes pass through it or be the destination of red cubes. In other words, a red cube on the east side prevents cubes of other colors from moving.
- Translator's note: transport may begin from a city that contains a red cube.
- On the west side of the wall, a blue cube represents U.S., British and French forces. A city on the west side that contains a blue cube may only have blue cubes pass through it or be the destination of blue cubes. In other words, a blue cube on the west side prevents cubes of other colors from moving.
- Translator's note: transport may begin from a city that contains a blue cube.
- On the east side of the wall, a red cube represents Soviet forces. A city on the east side that contains a red cube may only have red cubes pass through it or be the destination of red cubes. In other words, a red cube on the east side prevents cubes of other colors from moving.
Round Marker Advance
- When the round marker reaches the red disc, the Berlin Wall collapses. Remove all remaining red discs from the map.
- In the final two rounds, the transport restrictions based on the red and blue cubes (see "Goods Transport") no longer apply.
