Iceland (4–5 Players)

Apart from the changes listed here, all base rules apply.

Setup

  1. Place 2 steam (red goods) on each of the 4 volcanoes near the centre of the map.
  2. Place 2 random goods on each city.
  3. Remove the A new city tile from the game.

Playing the Game

Laying Track

Track cost

  • All hexes: $2

Track cannot be laid on volcano hexes.

Action: Urbanization

Urbanization is limited to 4 locations. When the 4th town has been urbanized, remove the remaining new city tiles from the game.

Transporting Goods

Steam

Steam cannot be transported to volcanoes. Volcanoes only produce steam, so in effect nothing can be transported to a volcano. Also, since volcanoes are not cities, goods cannot pass through them during transport.

Unlike other goods, the transport of steam follows special rules. The maximum number of links that can be used to transport steam equals the round number, and of course it is also limited by your own locomotive level. Steam may be transported to any city as its destination; it does not need to go to a red city (and as this map has no red cities, that is easy to see).

Example:

  • In round 1, steam can be transported to a city 1 link away.
  • In round 2, steam can be transported to a city up to 2 links away (if your locomotive level is 2 or higher).
  • ...
  • In round 6 and later, steam can be transported to a city up to 6 links away (if your locomotive level is 6 or higher).

When steam transport is complete, the steam is cooled by the extreme cold air and becomes water. Specifically, put the transported steam (red goods) into the bag, and in its place take water (blue goods) out of the bag and place it on the destination city. If there is no water in the bag, instead take any blue good from the goods display and place it on the destination city. If there is no blue good in the goods display either, unfortunately the steam evaporates without condensing into water and is lost!

Once steam has condensed into water, that water can be transported as a blue good in the normal way, to a blue city.

Ports and boat links

All ports (all towns with a boat drawn on them) are considered to be connected to each other. That is, each port has an invisible "boat link" to every other port. To pass through a boat link, you need a locomotive level of 2 per link rather than 1. However, when you transport 1 good through a boat link, the income of the transporting player increases by 2 (boat links have no specific owner).

If a port is urbanized, its boat link disappears.

Texas (4–5 Players)

Apart from the changes listed here, all base rules apply.

Setup

  1. A hex with derricks (oil rigs) is an oil field. For each oil field, place black goods equal to the number of derricks drawn on it.
  2. Place 3 goods on AUSTIN.
  3. Place 1 good on each of the other cities.

Playing the Game

Laying Track

Each player may lay up to 3 track tiles per round, but only 1 of them may be laid on an oil field. When track is laid on an oil field, all black goods that were on that hex are placed on that track tile.

Track cost

  • Plain: $3
  • Oil field: $2 per derrick drawn on that hex

Action: Engineer → Tanker

See "Action: Tanker" under "Transporting Goods".

Transporting Goods

Black goods on an oil field that does not yet have a track tile cannot be transported by anyone. Black goods on a track tile can be transported, but only by a player who has selected the Tanker action.

Action: Tanker

You may transport black goods that are on track tiles. The links used from the track tile to the first place reached (city/town) earn income for the owner of each link as usual. Transported black goods are removed from the game rather than returned to the bag. An oil field whose black goods have all been transported is no longer considered an oil field from then on.
