Setup

Eight islands are connected by several sea routes. Each sea route has a circular space. When you establish a connection between islands, place one disc on that circular space. Beside each sea route's circular space there is a square space of 1 to 3 squares, depending on its importance.

The four largest islands each have a dark circular space, and each of these shows one or two numbers corresponding to the goods chart printed in the upper right of the map. These dark circular spaces (hereafter called island-colour spaces) each receive one disc during setup, and the colour of that disc represents the colour of the island. This is equivalent to the city colour in the base rules, and shows which colour of cube can be transported to that island.

Choose a difficulty level:

  • Easy mode: Take one disc each of four colours (red, blue, yellow, purple). Place one of them at random on each island-colour space.
  • Standard mode: Take two discs each of two colours (for example, two red and two blue). Place one of them at random on each island-colour space.
  • Very hard mode: Take four discs of a single colour (for example, four purple). Place one of them at random on each island-colour space.

As setup, take the 34 cubes shown on the right out of the bag and place them as follows: 2 black, 8 red, 8 blue, 8 yellow, 8 purple.

  • Place one cube at random on each of the 1-to-3-square spaces along each sea route. (21 cubes in total.)
  • Place 3 cubes at random on the largest island. (3 cubes in total.)
  • Place 2 cubes at random on each of the 2nd through 4th largest islands. (6 cubes in total.)
  • Place 1 cube at random on each of the other islands. (4 cubes in total.)

Take the remaining cubes from the bag and place them at random on the goods chart printed in the upper right of the map.

On each circular space of the urbanization area at the bottom of the map, place one disc matching that space's colour (red, blue, yellow, purple, black, black).

Your player colour is green.

Goal

To clear the game, you must remove all cubes from the sea routes between the islands. To remove a cube from a sea route, you must transport a cube of the same colour along that sea route. After you transport a cube, return to the bag one cube on that sea route that matches the colour of the cube you transported.

Playing the Game

Turn Order Determination

There is naturally no bidding for turn order. You do not need to pay anything.

Action Selection

Choose one of the four actions shown in the lower left of the map. However, you may not choose the same action you chose in the previous round.

Track Laying

On this map, instead of laying 1 to 3 pieces of track, you only connect one sea route between any one pair of islands. This costs $8. Place one of your discs on the circular space of that sea route to show that you have connected it.

Action: Urbanize

Choose a disc from the urbanization area and place it on one of the small islands that does not yet have a disc. That island is now urbanized, and from then on, cubes of the corresponding colour can be transported to it.

Action: Engineer

You may connect a second sea route for $4. (That is, two sea routes cost $12 in total.)

Goods Transport

Income from transport is the same as usual. Each island is equivalent to a city, and each sea route with a disc on it (that is, that is connected) is equivalent to a completed link. When you transport a cube along a sea route, you may remove one cube of that colour from that sea route, if there is one of a matching colour.

Example: You have connected the sea route from Hawaii Island (no. 5/6) to Oahu (no. 3), and the sea route from Oahu to Kauai (no. 1/2). The sea route from Hawaii Island to Oahu holds one yellow cube and two purple cubes. The sea route from Oahu to Kauai holds one purple cube and one red cube. Your locomotive level is 2, and there is one purple cube on Hawaii Island that can be transported to Kauai via Oahu. By moving one purple cube along the sea route from Hawaii Island to Oahu, one purple cube is removed from that sea route. Continuing by moving it along the sea route from Oahu to Kauai, one purple cube is also removed from that sea route.

Goods Refill

This phase is carried out as usual, using the mini goods chart in the upper right. However, when refilling, roll 2 dice. Note that goods are never refilled onto urbanized islands.

Action: Production

Before rolling the dice for the goods refill, take 6 cubes from the bag and place 2 of them on any empty spaces of the goods chart. Return the 4 cubes you did not place to the bag.

End of Game

At the end of round 10, if you have been able to remove all cubes from the sea routes, you clear the game. Cubes may remain on the islands if they were not transported.
