Setting up the expansion
Above and Below: Groves is a 10-card expansion to Above and Below.
To play, shuffle the cards and place them face down near the play area. Place the top card face up next to the deck.
Playing with the expansion
When players explore, they may choose to explore the face up grove card instead of a cave card, the difference being that no story is read and the player can see the possible rewards.
When a player claims the grove card, the player uses their characters to explore, rolling for lanterns. The player then chooses which reward they will gain from what they can afford with their lanterns after rolling the dice. Only one reward may be chosen.
The player also gains the grove card, placing it adjacent to the rightmost building in their village. The grove card gives bonus village points at the end of the game if adjacent to a building card with a symbol matching the icon on the arrow on the grove card. When playing with the Groves expansion, once a building or grove has been placed adjacent to another building or grove, that card cannot be moved or rearranged on a later turn. This is true even if the player has yet to place a grove card.
- It requires at least two characters to do an Explore Action for a grove card.
- Buildings and grove cards are always played left to right without leaving any spaces.
- No card (building or grove) can be moved or rearranged once it is placed.
- The grove cards can only be placed in the above-ground area.
- The "person" symbol does allow the player to recruit a villager for free.
End of game scoring
A grove card does not count as a building for the end of game "1 point per building" rule.
The adjacency bonus for potions is only given for buildings that grant a potion (not for a Star House Card with a potion image).
