Objective
In Aapep you play either demon Aapep, trying to swallow the sun, or the god Ra, fighting to escape the underworld.
Players try to place Pyramid Tiles so that from any one edge of the board, there are either four light Tile sides visible (Ra escapes and wins) or four dark Tile sides visible (Aapep swallows the sun and wins). [See Diagram]
Contents
- Game board (it's under the lid!)
- 11 Pyramid Tiles
- 4 Player Chips (Yellow, Black, White, Red)
- 2 Shadow Chips (Grey)
- 12 Color Markers (Glass Stones)
Rules for 2 Players
Setting Up
The player who last visited either a desert or a beach begins as Ra (Yellow) and the other player as Aapep (Black).
Place the game board between the players with the pyramid tiles face up beside the board. Place the grey shadow chips in the top right and bottom left corners of the board. Each takes the player chip and one glass color marker of their color.
The left over chips and color markers are not used for 2 players.
Game Play
DAYTIME (Placement Phase): The game begins in Daytime. Yellow Ra always starts and then players take alternate turns.
On your turn you must take the following steps:
-
PLACE PYRAMID: place any unplayed Pyramid Tile in any orientation into an empty space on the board (i.e., no tile or shadow chip)
-
MOVE SHADOW: move one of the two Shadow Chips into an empty space of your choice
The next player now takes their turn. If any tiles remain to be placed they take their turn in Daytime. Once all Tiles have been placed, the game switches to Nighttime.
NIGHTTIME (Movement Phase): Once all Tiles have been placed then the game switches to Nighttime. Black Aapep always starts the Nighttime.
On your turn you must take the following steps:
- MOVE PYRAMID: move a Tile without a Color Marker on it to an empty space, changing its orientation if you wish.
You must move a Pyramid Tile -- you may NOT rotate a Tile in it's current position or pass your turn
-
MOVE MARKER: move YOUR Color Marker onto the Tile you just moved-- this prevents it from being moved again until after your next turn.
-
MOVE SHADOW: move one of the two Shadow Chips into the space that you just took the pyramid tile from.
Ending the Game
Play ends if at the end of any player's turn, from any edge of the board, there are either four light Tile sides visible (Ra wins) or four dark Tile sides visible (Aapep wins). Shadow Chips block tile placement but do not block visibility. [See Diagram]
If one move makes both players win, then the player who DID NOT make that move wins the game.
Rules for 3 or 4 Players
For 3 or 4 players, Ra and Aapep are joined by second incarnations of themselves, competing in loose alliances.
The player who last visited either a desert or a beach begins as Yellow Ra and other players are assigned by seating order.
For 3 players, other players are White Ra and Black Aapep. For 4 players Red Aapep is also included. Each player takes their Player Chip and one Color Marker.
Play in the following order, using the same rules as 2 players:
| Players | Seat order |
|---|---|
| 3 | Ra (Yellow), Ra (White), Aapep (Black) |
| 4 | Ra (Yellow), Aapep (Red), Ra (White), Aapep (Black) |
Yellow Ra always starts the Daytime and Black Aapep always starts the Nighttime. Game play is the same as 2 players.
When either Ra Escapes or Aapep swallows the sun, the winner is then determined as follows:
| Players | Ra Escapes: Top / Bottom | Ra Escapes: Left / Right | Aapep swallows the sun: Top / Bottom | Aapep swallows the sun: Left / Right |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | Yellow | White | Black | Black |
| 4 | Yellow | White | Black | Red |
You may wish to place the extra color markers at the edge of the board to show which player will win in each direction.
Tournament Scoring
If a single player wins, they score 3 points and any other player with the same Ra / Aapep allegience scores 1 point.
If two or more players win on the same turn, the player whose turn it was scores 0 and each other player scores 1 point, regardless of allegience and board position.
Players rotate roles for the next round so that Yellow Ra becomes Black Aapep, Black Aapep becomes White Ra, etc.
The first player to reach 10 points wins the tournament.
