Object of the Game

Be the first to line up 4 cubes of your colour vertically, horizontally or diagonally.

Setup

4mation is played on the game grid included in the box. Take the cubes out of the box; each player receives all the cubes of one colour. Then place the grid in the centre of the table.

Gameplay

Decide which player starts. That player places one of their cubes on the grid, on the space of their choice. The other player then places one of their cubes, and play continues in turns. The rules are as follows:

  • To place a cube, it must touch an edge or a corner of the last cube placed.

Example A: see the last page of the rulebook. The blue cube marked in the picture was placed last. A pink cube must now be placed on one of the spaces a, b, c, d or e.

Warning, Dead End!

If you cannot place your cube next to the last cube placed because the vertical, horizontal and diagonal neighbouring spaces are already occupied, you may place your cube on the space of your choice, provided that it touches an edge or a corner of an already placed cube of the other colour. For the rest of the game, the previously explained rules apply for this new cube.

Example B: see the last page of the rulebook. The circled blue cube in the picture is the last one placed. You may place the next pink cube on the free space to the right of the blue cube. Dead end! It will then no longer be possible to place a blue cube beside or at the corner of this pink cube. Consequently, you will be able to place a blue cube only on spaces a to i, but not on space j. On that last space, the blue cube would be next to a cube of the same colour only, and not to a cube of the other colour.

End of the Game

The game ends when a player manages to line up 4 of their cubes vertically, horizontally or diagonally. That player wins the game.

If a position is reached in which neither player can still succeed in correctly lining up 4 of their cubes, the game is a draw.
