Game Contents

  • 1 rulebook
  • 90 cards, split as follows:
    • 55 base cards
    • 24 special cards
    • 8 help cards
  • and 3 blank cards... be creative!

Setup

For your first games, use only the base cards.

Shuffle them and form a single draw pile with all the cards, face down, within everyone's reach.

The first player is the last person to have eaten an apple. If one of the players has ever eaten a pinecone in their life, they go first :)

Goal of the Game

2 Pommes 3 Pains is a calling game. Players draw a card in turn and call out a number of Apples and a number of Breads.

If a player makes a mistake, or takes too long to think, they pick up all the cards in play as a penalty.

To win, you must collect the fewest cards possible. Yes, you've got your bread cut out for you!

Turn Sequence

The first player flips a card and starts a first pile next to the draw pile.

They call out the number of Apples, then the number of Breads, that they see (see the "Announcement Rules" chapter below).

The player to their left flips a card and starts a second pile next to the draw pile.

They make their announcement, taking the visible cards into account.

The third player starts the third pile and makes their announcement.

Once the three piles are formed, further cards are played by respecting the order of the piles: 1, 2, then 3. A fourth pile is never added!

Announcement Rules

The player may take up to 5 seconds to think before making their announcement.

They must start by calling the Apples, then the Breads.

The announcement must be smooth and continuous, with no dead time, hesitation, or inappropriate addition!

Announcements are based ONLY on the visible cards — covered cards no longer count!

If one of the elements, Apple or Bread, is missing, the player must say "NO ..." in place of the number of Apples or Breads.

Caution: the announcement must be built only in the following way: "X Apples X Breads."

  • An Apple counts as 1 Apple (well, yes!)
  • A Bread counts as 1 Bread (okay, I get it...)
  • A pinecone counts as 1 Apple and 2 Breads (indeed, good thing you specified!)

Worked example: three visible cards show a total of four apples (one card shows two apples, the other two show one apple each) and no bread — the correct announcement is "4 Apples, No Bread!"

Worked example: 1 Bread, plus 1 Apple-2-Breads (a pinecone), equals an announcement of "1 Apple 3 Breads."

Challenging an Announcement

If a player thinks an announcement is inaccurate, they can challenge it before a new card is played.

To do this, they declare "Y'a un pépin!" ("There's a pip!" — a play on words, since a pépin is an apple seed).

If the challenged announcement turns out to be wrong, the player who made that announcement picks up the cards as a penalty.

If the challenged announcement is shown to be correct, it's the challenger who picks up the cards as a penalty.

When a player picks up cards as a penalty, they stack them in a pile in front of them, then immediately start a new turn.

Following the announcement, the next player must flip a card within the next 5 seconds, or else they pick up the cards as a penalty.

End of the Game

As soon as a player flips the last card of the deck, they make their announcement as usual, and then the game ends! Flipped cards may therefore remain in play.

Each player then counts the cards in the pile in front of them (received as penalties).

The player(s) with the fewest cards win the game!

Playing with the "2 Apples 3 Breads" Announcement

If the configuration of visible cards matches the announcement "2 Apples 3 Breads," every player's action is to slap the draw pile as fast as possible.

The last player to react picks up all the cards from that round as a penalty, then starts a new turn.

This rule overrides all others!

If a player slaps the pile when the announcement is not "2 Apples 3 Breads," they pick up the cards as a penalty.

Playing with Special Cards

There are special cards that you can add to the base cards.

You can add whichever cards you like.

We nonetheless recommend starting with the underlined cards.

For each special card added to the starting draw pile, place the corresponding help card near the play area. These help cards create a reminder of the different actions that may come up during the game.

Continuous Effect Cards

Some cards have a continuous effect.

They change the game until they are covered up.

The effects of these cards can therefore stack.

Pain Perdu (Lost Bread / French Toast)

Where is it? Well, not there!

Do not add a Bread. Remove 1 Bread per Pain Perdu card in play.

If the announcement would be negative, simply announce "No Bread."

Pain Rassis (Stale Bread)

Counts as 1 Bread.

While the player makes their announcement, they must stand up and sit back down.

It will therefore be "settled" (rassis)!

If a player forgets during their turn, they pick up the cards.

Pain au Lait (Milk Bread)

Counts as 1 Bread.

At the end of the announcement, all players must simultaneously raise their arms while shouting "Olé!"

If a player forgets, they pick up the cards.

Tarte Tatin (Upside-Down Apple Tart)

Counts as 1 Apple and 1 Bread.

Careful, it's an upside-down tart, so the announcement is upside down too!

Announce the Breads first, then the Apples.

If two Tarte Tatin cards are visible, the announcement stays reversed until both of them are covered up.

Immediate Effect Cards

There are three cards with an immediate effect.

When they are flipped, immediately carry out the requested action; afterward, the card counts only for its base value (apple or bread) until it is covered up.

Compote de Pommes (Applesauce)

Counts as 2 Apples. Well, of course, it's in the name!

The active player points to a player and taps their hand while announcing the Apples.

The designated player must do a new fist-bump with the active player, announcing the Breads in response.

Naturally, if one of the players makes a mistake in the announcement, they pick up the cards as a penalty!

Play then resumes to the left of the player who flipped the card.

Pomme d'Amour (Candy Apple / Love Apple)

Love can sometimes be treacherous!

Counts as 1 Apple.

Blow a kiss toward a player, and that player must make the announcement in your place.

Play then resumes to the left of the player who flipped the card.

If the designated player gets it wrong, they pick up the cards.

Pain Grillé (Toast)

Counts as 1 Bread.

When this card is flipped, all the other players count out loud to 3: "1, 2, 3!" Once the count is finished, the active player must immediately make their announcement or pick up the cards as a penalty!

You can now play with whichever special cards you choose.

We nonetheless recommend not putting more than 3 special cards into play at the same time.

The management of 2 Pommes 3 Pains disclaims all responsibility in the event of any madness resulting from the use of more cards at the same time! ;)
