Objective
In this game, the AUTHOR and the READERS must work as a team to win. The READERS have to guess the secret code that the AUTHOR has inside the book box before the turns run out.
Roles
AUTHOR: The AUTHOR must guide the READERS to discover the facts, without speaking and using images. The AUTHOR tries to relate the AUTHOR CARDS with the READER CARDS indicated by the secret code. It is recommended that the most experienced player take the role of AUTHOR.
READERS: The READERS must relate the AUTHOR CARDS with the READER CARDS that the AUTHOR gives them, and use their intuition to interpret the AUTHOR's message correctly.
RESPONSIBLE READERS: Before starting, the READERS must choose the RESPONSIBLES, one for each row. If the READERS do not agree on where to place a READER TOKEN, the RESPONSIBLE of that row has the last word.
Number of Roles by Player Count
| Players | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AUTHOR | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| READERS | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 5 |
| RESPONSIBLES | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 4 |
Note: if more people want to play, the distribution of roles is free.
Difficulty Levels
| Difficulty | Level 1 (Easy) | Level 2 | Level 3 | Level 4 | Level 5 (Hard) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Columns | 5 | 5 | 6 | 6 | 6 |
| Flag | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Turns | 5 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 3 |
Read the difficulty levels to know how many columns to place.
Setup
- Deal the roles: one player is the AUTHOR and the rest are READERS. (If it is the first time, the player with the most board game experience will be the AUTHOR.)
- Create a row of COLUMNS from lowest to highest. Note: read the difficulty levels to know how many COLUMNS to place.
- Shuffle the READER CARDS for characters (PERSONAJES), situations (SITUACIONES), places (LUGARES) and food (COMIDAS) separately. Then create 4 rows with 6 READER CARDS per row. The first row is for characters, the second for situations, the third for places and the last for food. Turn over the READER CARDS of the 4 rows.
- The AUTHOR prepares their play area by standing the book box upright so that nobody can see what is behind it.
- The AUTHOR places the FLAG on top of the book (if the chosen difficulty level allows it).
- The AUTHOR places the 4 AUTHOR DICE, the AUTHOR CARDS and the ENVELOPES behind the book box.
Example setup for difficulty level 3 (printed in the rulebook).
Gameplay
-
The READERS choose the RESPONSIBLES, one for each row, and each takes the corresponding READER TOKEN: PERSONAJE (character), SITUACIÓN (situation), LUGAR (place) or COMIDA (food).
-
The AUTHOR rolls the AUTHOR DICE to create the secret code, and places them inside the box without any other player seeing them. Note: if the chosen difficulty is Level 1, the secret code may NOT include any AUTHOR DIE showing a 6.
Example: The secret code is 2 4 3 1. (The colour refers to the row and the number refers to the COLUMN.) The blue die refers to the characters row, and the number 2 refers to COLUMN 2.
-
The AUTHOR identifies the cards to be guessed and takes the first 6 AUTHOR CARDS.
-
The AUTHOR must find the relation between their 6 AUTHOR CARDS and the 4 READER CARDS indicated by the secret code. Once the AUTHOR has chosen the 4 AUTHOR CARDS, the AUTHOR places them face up, to the right of the corresponding row. (Place all 4 AUTHOR CARDS at the same time.)
Example: The AUTHOR relates one AUTHOR CARD with "la lavandera" (the washerwoman) because of the water. The man in the building has a sword, like the soldier in the battle. The building with legs has a shape similar to the "Cabildo". The soup with the building has a bowl similar to "locro".
-
The READERS now must discuss and reach an agreement before placing the READER TOKEN (Personajes, Situaciones, Lugares, Comidas) on the READER CARDS they believe are correct. As a reminder, in case of disagreement, it is the REFERENT who places the READER TOKEN. Note: the REFERENT is the term used in this step of the printed rulebook; the Roles section names the same role RESPONSIBLE. Note: the AUTHOR may add difficulty by placing the hourglass to limit the READERS' discussion time.
-
The READERS say out loud the 4-digit code obtained from the COLUMN in which each selected READER CARD is located. The first number is that of the characters row, then situations, places, and finally the food row.
End of Game
The players win if the READERS guess the AUTHOR's secret code before the turns run out.
The players lose if the READERS do not manage to guess the AUTHOR's secret code before the turns run out.
After the game, the AUTHOR may tell the READERS the true story of how Belgrano created the Argentine flag, naming the 4 READER CARDS.
Flag
If the difficulty level chosen allows it (see the difficulty levels table), the FLAG is placed on top of the book box. At any moment of the game, the AUTHOR may discard any number of AUTHOR CARDS and draw new AUTHOR CARDS until they have 6.
Note: the AUTHOR must tell the READERS that they will use the FLAG, by singing a short verse of their country's anthem or simply by placing the FLAG inside the book box.
*Source note: the printed flag paragraph repeats the phrase "if the level above the book box if the chosen difficulty level allows it", and its page reference reads "pág. *" (blank in the source). It is transcribed here as a single sentence; the difficulty levels table is the reference for which levels allow the FLAG.
Tip
Once the AUTHOR has handed 4 AUTHOR CARDS to the READERS, the AUTHOR can draw 4 new AUTHOR CARDS and think about the next turn.
Important
The AUTHOR may only help the READERS by handing over AUTHOR CARDS. At no time may the AUTHOR speak or gesture.
