Goal of the Game

13WORDS is a cooperative game in which players try to obtain the best common score altogether.

At every turn, players will try to guess the word chosen by one of them: the Captain.

Content

1 board, 8 answer wheels, 224 word cards, 1 Captain token.

Setup

  1. Place the board between the players.
  2. Randomly place 12 cards around the board and one in the center.
  3. A player is randomly chosen and takes the Captain token.
  4. Each player takes a wheel and places the star of the outer disc on the number 0 to indicate their starting score.

On the first round, the Captain reads out loud the 12 words placed around the board. Players try to not make any comment.

The remaining components will not be used for the rest of the game.

Turns

Phase A: Announcement

The Captain reads aloud the word written on the card in the center of the board.

Phase B: Selection

Each player secretly uses the arrow in the middle of their wheel to choose the number of a card around the board:

  • The Captain chooses the card they think has the most obvious link with the card in the center of the board.
  • Each player points to the card they think the Captain chose.

Once players have answered, they place their wheels face down in front of them.

Note: Try not to give any clues until everyone has put their wheels down!

Example: Charlie, who is the Captain, indicates the answer 4 on her wheel because for her the word "Rope" is the most related to the word in the center of the board: "Boat".

Phase C: Resolution

First the Captain and then all the players turn over their wheels and explain their choices.

  • Each player who picked the same card as the Captain wins 1 star.
  • The Captain wins 1 star if at least one player picked the same card as him/her.

ATTENTION: If no one player has the same answer as the Captain, no one gets a star.

Example: Cedrick, Lume and Eric all gave the same answer as Charlie who was the Captain for this round. Each of these 4 players, including Charlie, wins 1 star. But not Romain because he had a different answer from the Captain.

New Round

  • The card chosen by the Captain is turned over (to reveal a new word) and placed in the center of the board, covering the previous card (so there will be one less card around the board).
  • The player to the left of the Captain collects the Captain token and becomes the new Captain.
  • A new round begins! (phase A)

End of the Game

The game ends when there is only one card left around the board (otherwise it would be too easy).

The players add up their scores and calculate the total team score, which they compare to the scoring board down below or on the back of the Captain token.

Look at the column that corresponds to the Number of players and look for the row of the Score you reached to know your Success Level.

You didn't reach the score on the first line? Don't give up, you will improve with each game.
