Setup

  • The deck contains 52 King cards. Each card represents a King of one colour and his law. A different character has slipped into each of the 4 colours. Each of them is still considered a King.
  • Place the 1st King card in the centre of the play area. This card is the King in power.
  • Shuffle all the other cards and form a face-down draw pile.
  • Set up a reserve with the tokens (pions) and crowns (couronnes).
  • Deal 6 cards to each player.
  • Editor's note: the component counts printed as icons on the rules page (tokens, blasons, guards, crowns) are not recoverable from the text layer of the source and are not transcribed here.
  • The most generous player is the first player. As compensation, the other players take crowns from the reserve: the 2nd player takes 1 crown, the 3rd takes 2, the 4th takes 3, and the 5th takes 4.

Special Cards

  • Special cards (yellow) are played like King cards, but they also serve as a Joker (see page 7).
  • The 1st King card is used at the start of the game.

Turn Order

Players take turns in clockwise order. On your turn, you must take one of the following 3 choices:

  • Apply the law of the King in power.
  • Change the King in power.
  • Redo your hand.

End of the Game

The player who obtains their 13th crown immediately wins the game.

Applying the Law

To apply the law and obtain the reward, you must carry out the action shown on the card of the King in power.

  • Example: to gain 1 crown and 1 guard, you must reveal 1 blue card and 1 orange card from your hand.
  • Example: to steal 1 crown from an opponent, you must discard 1 blason.

On your turn, you may apply the law of the King in power several times, as long as the action is achievable (see page 6).

Changing the King

  • To change the King, you must play a card from your hand, covering the King card already in power.
  • After changing the King, you may apply his law.
  • If the King in power is a card with a hole, also keep the card whose reward is visible through the hole.
  • Among the Kings, 4 have a law with a hole in place of the reward. Once such a King is in power, the new law therefore lets the reward of the previous King's law show through. The former King in power (orange card) is replaced by the new King in power (green card).
  • Example: the player decides to keep their blue King.

Redoing Your Hand

  • When you redo your hand, you do not gain crowns or tokens, but the new cards you acquire will help you later in the game.
  • To redo your hand, you may first discard any number of cards from your hand (even 0), then draw new cards until you have 6 cards in hand.
  • Example: the player completes their hand to 6 cards.
  • Note: If the draw pile is empty, it is reformed by shuffling all discarded and played cards, except the King in power.

Action Icons

The actions below require you to reveal cards from your hand to your opponents.

  • Reveal 2 cards: 1 blue and 1 purple.
  • Reveal 1 card of the colour announced aloud by the player who played the card. The announced colour stays the same for all the other players.
  • Reveal 2 cards of the same colour.

Note: Revealed cards return to your hand.

Note: If during your turn you apply the law several times, you must reveal different cards each time. It may be time to change the King in power.

Reward Icons

The rewards below are obtained when the actions of the applied law are respected.

  • Gain 1 crown from the reserve.
  • Gain 4 crowns from the reserve.
  • Gain 1 guard and 1 blason of the colour of your choice from the reserve.

Note: If a reward cannot be obtained (no more tokens in the reserve, etc.), it is lost.

Attention: A player cannot hold more than 2 tokens (pions) (see page 8).

When a law shows the steal icon, the indicated reward is not taken from the reserve but is stolen directly from your opponents.

Discard and Steal Actions

The actions below (with the discard icon) require you to discard cards, crowns or tokens. Discarded cards are placed in a discard pile, face down.

  • Discard 2 orange cards.
  • Discard 1 blason.
  • Steal 2 cards from your opponents.
  • Steal 1 crown from an opponent.

Note: When stealing several cards, crowns or tokens, you may split the theft between one or several players.

Note: When stealing a card, you take it at random from the opponent's hand.

Note: A token that is discarded is returned to the reserve.

Actions Usable Once per Turn

The actions below can be performed only once per turn.

  • You must have strictly more green cards than each of your opponents, and you reveal them. If an opponent has the same number or more than you, they must say so and reveal them. In that case, nobody gains the reward.
  • You must have strictly fewer crowns than each of your opponents.
  • You must have exactly 4 cards in hand.

Special Cards in Actions

  • A special card can be played normally to become the King in power and thus change the law.
  • When applying a law where you must reveal or discard cards, a special card may be discarded to replace 1 missing card of any colour.

Tokens, Guards and Blasons

Tokens (Pions)

  • You cannot hold more than 2 tokens.
  • Note: If you want to acquire a possible 3rd token, you must discard one of your tokens.

Guard (Garde)

  • At the end of your turn, you may protect the King in power by placing on him 1 Guard from your possession.
  • Note: There can be only one Guard on a King.
  • An opponent who wishes to change a King protected by a Guard must first discard the Guard by giving you 1 card from their hand.
  • Note: If you placed the Guard, you may change the King in power by ignoring and discarding the Guard.

Blason

  • When applying a law where you must reveal or discard cards, you may discard a Blason in your possession to replace 1 card of the same colour.
  • Example: to apply the law and gain the 4 crowns, the player reveals 3 blue cards and discards the blue Blason.
