Do I have to pass when I run out of coins, and can I use coins I gain after passing?
Several players agree and the rulebook says a passed player takes no more turns; the cited publisher post is about something else.

Yes. If you have no coins at the start of your turn you must pass; spending your last coin does not pass you immediately. Once you pass, you take no more turns that round, so a coin gained later is saved for next round.
