The rulebook's Explore section gives these costs and the per-cave count; the publisher confirms the cost marks belong to Explore.

The first explore of a cave each round costs 1 coin, the second 1 coin and 1 egg, and the third (the maximum) 1 coin and 2 eggs; the counts are per cave, so a different cave starts at 1 coin. The 1st/2nd/3rd cost marks on the mat belong to Explore, not to Excavate. You take one action per turn, so you explore one cave per turn.
