Does Theoden keep his battle bonus if Gandalf's separate battle is resolved first?

Under the written rules, no: if the separate Gandalf battle is fought before Theoden's, Theoden's bonus is gone by the time he fights. The designer concedes a thematic argument for simultaneous battles but chose not to change the rule for this one case.
