How do Corvette Shields and the Improved Dreadnought absorb damage?

A Corvette's shield absorbs only the first damage of the combat (either in the Approach or the first Salvo). The improved shield works every Salvo, but only against the second damage of that Salvo, which in effect cancels torpedoes. The Improved Dreadnought ignores one Sector Defense in total and absorbs 1 damage per Fleet Power, not split by Approach or Salvo.
