Sentries are effectively mobile sector defenses: attacking they give 1 initiative like a Corvette, and defending they do 1 Approach damage and give no initiative, so defending Sentries do no damage in the Salvo. You choose who takes hits, so it usually makes sense to lose them first on defense.
