Does an additional card's effect work if its colour does not match, and does it re-trigger the slot?
Yes. The extra card works whatever the colour of the slot or the first card, and then goes to your tableau or discard under normal rules. It does not place another worker or perform a slot action, so it can be done even when your worker is on the always-available slot.
