Are pre-combat effects part of the space battle?
Several replies agree; a quoted FAQ passage that suggested otherwise was called misleading.

Yes. Pre-combat effects are part of the space battle but not a combat round, and PDS fire is a separate earlier step. So, for example, a Nekro Virus can gain technology from pre-combat kills.
