Can I place a tradesman on or activate a conversion card (Journeyman, Troubadour, Artisan, Innkeeper) that I can't pay for?
The designer said you can't activate without paying the card's cost at least once; the card texts give the costs.

No. The card must be able to complete at least one conversion, so you need the printed cost (3 deniers for Journeyman, 3 influence for Troubadour, 1 influence for Artisan, 1 denier for Innkeeper). Each additional activation costs and pays again.
