Do I need the Academy to play the solo Heir, and can I play solo without the Dark Alley?

Yes, the Heir mode uses Academy components. Solo play is not intended without the Dark Alley either; if you want a shorter game, ignore the Special Assignment and Dark Alley assignments rather than dropping the module. The Academy setup uses the Academy board side and Academy-icon plan cards; the non-Academy setup uses the Dark Alley side and Dark Alley plan cards.
