How exactly must the wished card be played, and can I play it alone?

You may play the wished rank in any legal way that matches what is on the table: if the Mah Jong was led as a single, the wished card is played as a single, even if that breaks a pair or triple. You may play just the wished card rather than the strongest combination containing it, and any legal combination containing it satisfies the wish.
