Do I have to play when I can, or can I pass and play later in the same trick?
The rulebook gives the choice of passing or playing and the three-pass end; players confirm re-entering.

No — you may always pass unless you hold the lead or must fulfil a Mah Jong wish. Passing only skips your turn; if the trick comes back around to you, you can play then. The trick ends after three consecutive passes.
