What is the penalty for an incorrect theory?

The theory is removed from the game and its owner advances their pawn one sector. When several incorrect theories are removed because a correct one confirmed the sector, the designer confirmed the penalty is one sector per incorrect theory, so two wrong theories cost the same player two sectors, even though the rulebook wording reads as one advance per player.
