Obsidian is a wild resource that can replace wood, stone or gold, but not an 'any resource' reward and not cocoa. Exceptions: under the Coatlicue Priestess's drawback it only pays for effects that name obsidian, so Technology 3½ (one obsidian in place of up to 3 cocoa, once per turn) still works but a tile listing only wood, stone and gold does not. Technology 5½ gives 1 obsidian on every Collect Cocoa and every Royal tile worship on board 1. Modules 7, 8 and 9 require the Obsidian module.
