When I upgrade a Speakeasy, what happens to the old Speakeasy, its barrel and its Family Member?
The designer confirms the barrel stays, and community players agree the Family Member stays too; the rulebook is silent on both.

The Speakeasy is removed from the game and does not return to your board. The barrel and the protecting Family Member stay in place, so a protected building stays protected after the upgrade.
