Can the free-blank artifact put a marker anywhere on the map?
The publisher explained what a blank means, and it matches the artifact's printed text.

No. It only makes one blank in your character's pattern free instead of 2 coins. It doesn't let you place a marker without a character card, nor does it let you choose placement beyond the card's pattern.
