Do both markers need to reach a player-board reward space before I unlock it?
The designer said both markers are needed, and the rulebook notes that some reward spaces need two markers.

Yes, where the space sits between two tracks. Both markers must have reached or passed it, and the reward is taken once. Merely passing a space is enough; you do not have to land on it exactly.
