The rulebook counts range from your nearest piece, and the Hofstadterian text allows temples.

Yes. Once you have placed any piece on the board, a building or a population figure, range is counted from your nearest piece and never again from the chasm. The same holds for Hofstadterian temples, so if a temple is your first piece, range counts from it.
