Can I use free actions (machines, crates, trading crystals) in the middle of an action or while a card is resolving?
The designer ruled that free actions may interrupt an action, and the rulebook says free actions can be taken at any time.

Yes, in general. Free actions can be taken at any time during your turn, including partway through resolving an action, so you can spend resources as you gain them or send a played card to your resting area with a machine once its effect has been activated. A few effects that convert everything at once, such as the food-to-crystal card, are the exception.
