Only in response to a power that you use. So you can turn it when you use your own Check Victory power, such as Sorcerer's Bestiary or Coral Castle, or when Dark Cathedral's React is used, to score extra for a Dragon, Demon or Creature. You cannot use it in the normal end-of-round check or when a rival calls the check, though a React of yours such as Dark Cathedral can still bring it in.
