Do you gain essences when you discard a card to pay a cost or as part of a power, such as Elvish Heartwood or Fortune Teller?
The rulebook says so explicitly and the designer confirmed it.

No — you gain the 1 Gold or 2 essences only when you take the discard-an-Artifact action. Discarding to pay a cost (Elvish Heartwood) or as part of a cost (Fortune Teller) gives nothing.
