How does setup differ for a first game compared to later games?

In a first game each player gets start world 1-4 (by player count) and the matching preset four-card hand, with no six-card deal or discard. In later games, deal one start world face up to each player, deal six cards, and discard two. Experienced groups can add the optional choose-a-start-world rules from the expansions or second edition.
