Does ignoring adjacency let me place a tile away from all my other tiles?
The designer confirmed this, and the rulebook's phrase entry for ignoring adjacency says the same.

Yes. The tile may go anywhere legal on the grid, not necessarily next to another tile. You still must stay inside the grid, avoid overlap, and obey any restrictions from your planet, corporation or event cards.
