May I flip a tile or pick it up to test how it fits?

Yes to both. Tiles have identical art on both sides, so flipping and rotating are part of your options, but cutting or altering a tile is not. Lifting a tile reveals what is printed underneath, so a table that finds this troublesome can agree a house rule.
