Can an item's bonus apply to a basic check during story mode?
The Story rules mention item bonuses on checks, but the designer did not rule directly and a player disputes it.

Yes, according to the Story rules, which say checks may be modified by item bonuses. The designer added that such cards are mainly meant for use in encounters, and that there are only one or two basic checks in the whole story.
