If I play a card of the same element on a slot, must I stack it and can I go back down a level?

A same-element card must go on top of the existing stack and raises the power by one. You cannot lower a stack. To drop in power you must place a card of a different element, which discards the old stack, and a fourth same-element card on a three-stack discards the bottom card and stays at power 3.
