Can a hero defend against an attack that deals indirect damage, like Sandman's?

Yes. Defending reduces the attack's damage by the defender's DEF and the remainder is distributed. Defending only changes indirect damage when the attack's own text says it deals indirect damage, which is true for Sandman I and II but not Sandman III.
