When do combat-point bonuses on cards trigger, and can I save them?
The designer ruled on the once-per-combat trigger and on spending points later.

A "combat points" bonus is applied once per set of combat actions (not per action). The points move your marker on the ship board, and you can spend them whenever you like, including in a later combat. A red-banner sword bonus on a card adds swords to your track once each time you fight, with a larger bonus when you fight for the nation shown.
