What do the background colours behind a card's benefit mean?
The designer explained the beige and green scrolls; the blue and red meanings are agreed by players.

A beige (tan) scroll is a one-time benefit you get immediately when the card is played. A green scroll is income: you move your income marker at once, and are paid at the end of every round. Blue is an assistant or activated effect, and red is a permanent or conditional effect. Synergy-token bonuses add to the income.
